Read part 1 of the series: ‘Manly P. Hall’s Lessons of Self-Unfoldment Part 1 : Personal Growth’.
I wish to share with you selected passages from the book ‘Self-unfoldment by Disciplines of Realization’ written by Manly P. Hall.
This book contains many wise lessons and practical instructions on how we can penetrate deep within ourselves so to understand the Truth of who we are, and how we fit into this universal existence.
The ultimate aim is to attain the self-knowledge for us to grow effortlessly towards wisdom and a blessed life.
I am still in the process of reading this fascinating book, and will endeavor to post more enlightening and insightful passages as I go along.
From ‘Chapter 1 – Theory of Disciplines’:
Metaphysical disciplines are not to be regarded as competitive exercises in which one vies with another in the magnitude of his imaginings, or yearns toward some metaphysical aristocracy. All metaphysical exercises worthy of the NAME are an unfolding of self into the light of virtue, beauty, and wisdom. The illustration for this lesson is taken from the Zen school of Chinese art. It is the “lone traveler,” a solitary monk standing on the edge of a great cliff gazing out into the mist. Far beyond rise dimly the shadows of high mountains in the ageless contrast to gnarled and broken trees in the foreground. Much has been said of the loneliness of wisdom, and how much the Truth seeker becomes a pilgrim wandering from start to star. To the ignorant, the wise man is lonely because he abides in distant heights of the mind. But the wise man himself does not feel lonely. Wisdom brings him nearer to life; closer to the heart of the world than the foolish man can ever be. Bookishness may lead to loneliness, and scholarship may end in a battle of beliefs, but the wise man gazing off into space sees not an emptiness, but a space full of life, truth, and law.
The Truth-Seeker’s lonely mission is to:

The results of recent research suggests that ancient, or prehistoric, builders of the monumental structures found in such diverse places as Ireland, Malta, southern Turkey and Peru all have a peculiarly common characteristic — they may have been specially designed to conduct and manipulate sound to produce certain sensory effects.
Beginning in 2008, a recent and ongoing study of the massive 6,000-year-old stone structure complex known as the Hal Saflieni Hypogeum on the island of Malta, for example, is producing some revelatory results. Like its related prehistoric temple structures on Malta, this structure features central corridors and curved chambers. But this structure is unique in that it is subterranean, created through the removal of an estimated 2,000 tons of stone carved out with stone hammers and antler picks.
Low voices within its walls create eerie, reverberating echoes, and a sound made or words spoken in certain places can be clearly heard throughout all of its three levels. Now, scientists are suggesting that certain sound vibration frequencies created when sound is emitted within its walls are actually altering human brain functions of those within earshot.
“Regional brain activity in a number of healthy volunteers was monitored by EEG through exposure to different sound vibration frequencies,” reports Malta temple expert Linda Eneix of the Old Temples Study Foundation, “The findings indicated that at 110 Hz the patterns of activity over the prefrontal cortex abruptly shifted, resulting in a relative deactivation of the language center and a temporary shifting from left to right-sided dominance related to emotional processing and creativity. This shifting did not occur at 90 Hz or 130 Hz.
In addition to stimulating their more creative sides, it appears that an atmosphere of resonant sound in the frequency of 110 or 111 Hz would have been “switching on” an area of the brain that bio-behavioral scientists believe relates to mood, empathy and social behavior. Deliberately or not, the people who spent time in such an environment under conditions that may have included a low male voice — in ritual chanting or even simple communication — were exposing themselves to vibrations that may have actually impacted their thinking.”
Researchers at the University of Malta are confirming the findings in an ongoing study.
But the Hypogeum is not alone in its peculiar sound effects. A study conducted in 1994 by a consortium from Princeton University found that acoustic behavior in ancient chambers at megalithic sites such as Newgrange in Ireland and Wayland’s Smithy in England was characterized by a strong sustained resonance, or “standing wave” in a frequency range between 90 Hz and 120 Hz. “When this happens,” says Eneix, “what we hear becomes distorted, eerie. The exact pitch for this behavior varies with the dimensions of the room and the quality of the stone.”
Going further back in time, she points to the ancient 10,000 B.C. site of Göbekli Tepe in southern Turkey. Built by hunter-gatherers, the site is thought by many scientists to be located in the area transitional to the first development of agriculture and domesticated livestock. Located on a hilltop, it consists of 20 round stone-built structures which had been buried. Those structures that have been excavated feature massive, T-shaped, standing limestone pillars. “In the center of a circular shrine,” she says, “a limestone pillar “sings” when smacked with the flat of the hand. Obviously made to represent a human with a decorated belt and hands carved in relief at its waist, it bears unexplained symbols in the area of the throat.
And now, new findings of a recent archaeoacoustic study suggests that the ancients of the 3,000-year-old Andean ceremonial center at Chavín de Huántar, in the central highlands of Peru, practiced a fine art and science of manipulating sound with architecture to produce desired sensory effects. With the assistance of architectural form and placement, and sounds emitted from conch-shell trumpets, the “oracle” of Chavín de Huántar “spoke” to the ancient center’s listeners.

Instead of feeding the gods with blood and burnt offerings, the kahunas understood the secret that lay behind the externals of all sacrifice. The High Self, in order to produce results in the physical plane must draw from the physical body of the earthy man sufficient vital force or mana to use in the work.
The custom of building temples or shrines to aid in contacting the gods was not practiced by the genuine kahunas, although the spurious kahunas of later times built temples of stone and offered sacrifices in vain efforts to get magical results.
The true kahunas needed no temples or shrines. They knew how to send the telepathic message to the High Self at will, regardless of place or conditions. They used no altar symbols, no incense or other mechanisms. (These things were reserved for use as physical stimuli to impress the low self when suggestion was being given for various purposes.)
The various rites used in religions to insure the dying a survival in spirit form and a certain amount of happiness as a spirit, were unknown to the kahunas. They had no place in their matter-of-fact science for dogmas which would demand a “salvation.” Their teaching was simply that all people should know that the spirits of men survived death and that the memories and complexes of physical life were carried over into the spirit life, making it advisable for the individual to rid himself of guilt complexes before death. (This may have given rise in ancient times to the non-kahuna practices aimed at preparing man for a better life after physical death.)
The kahunas believed that after death there was a continuation of growth and progression, the low self reincarnating as a middle self in due time and the middle self eventually rising to the level of the High Selves, first learning to watch over lesser forms of life, and in the end becoming the “utterly truthworthy parental spirit” or High Self of a low and middle self incarnated in the physical., Not a great deal was known about this process of growth and progression, so little was taught about it except as a part of the speculative doctrines of Huna. The graduation, so to speak, of the low self to the level of a middle self is accomplished after death during a period of inactivity resembling a long sleep. One is reminded of the worm which becomes a pupa, is inactive for a time, and then bursts forth a butterfly.
The most important preparation for death must be done by the individual. He must reduce his guilt complexes to the minimum and free himself of dogmatic religious beliefs which will hinder him after he becomes a spirit. It is not necessary to spend more than a few months on the spirit plane before continuing the growth process, providing one knows the ropes as did the kahunas. Knowing Huna is knowing the ropes.
All we can take with us at the time of death is knowledge, and it should be the first duty of each of us to accumulate the correct “take-withable” knowledge by a careful study of the psycho-religions and the discarding of beliefs which cannot be substantiated.

There is much consternation today about the words “cult” and “occult”, and what they mean. Many are worried that their own organizations, groups, or religions may fall into this category. Since the word “occult” merely refers to “secret” or “hidden”, it is used by doctors to describe unknown bacteria as being “occult”.
I began studying this controversy—including the science involved—when I was but a child of eight years, in 1946, after interviewing oil field pumpers who had seen silvery “flying disks” in the remote oil fields in the west Texas and southern New Mexico desert. At the age of 13, I spent a couple of days visiting with family friends and their neighbor, astrophysicist Dr. Lincoln La Paz, in Albuquerque, New Mexico.
La Paz was then employed by the U.S. government to help cover up Nazi flying saucer technology brought to New Mexico after WWII. My early convictions were later corroborated when I acquired a piece of hardware from a 1943 German flying saucer at Sandia Base where La Paz worked. Since the truth about electropropulsion is based on “ether” (A.K.A. “aether”) physics, which has been collected, hidden away, or declared “national security secrets”, or intentionally obliterated by false propaganda which is so intense that the general public remains unaware of the facts which are right under their noses, I have dubbed the ether physics ultimately connected to electro-propulsion, “Occult Ether Physics”.
This book is dedicated to the rediscovery of, examination of, and the integration of these secrets into the public knowledge. The high priests of this occult knowledge are the elite owners of the coercive monopolist corporate banking, industrial, mineral and related interests, who in turn allow the initiation of certain scientists, military and government officials into their secret teachings only insofar as it is necessary, to execute and maintain a conspiracy of giant proportions, so that the technology can be classified as a “state secret” which can be controlled and enforced by means of unconstitutional “national security laws”, military and civilian legal authority, and police. These measures are intended to protect the archaic technology and resources controlled by the elite, from the competition of a truly free market society.
Because of the last 76 or more years of progressively intensifying false propaganda and manipulation of knowledge and science, a majority of scientists ridicule the concepts of the existence of an ether and of flying saucers, as if such thinking belonged in the category of a “flat earth” theory and the “little green men” from outer space babblings, but the reverse is true.
The proponents of Relativism and the Big Bang (the “Big Bangers”) want you to believe that the universe is finite, so that, if you go “too far”, you will “fall off the universe”, rather than off a “flat earth”. What’s the difference? Flat earth… finite universe… they’re both dumb theories.
And what do the “little green men” lies have to do with exclusively man-made electric flying machines, and technology based on sound and well-established electrical science and physics, but which, like the existence of the ether, has been tucked away in secret vaults, to keep you from using it, while you are being fed false and useless “theories”?
These range from “curved space”, “time travel”, “Big Bang”, and “alien abduction” stories, to “parallel universe”, “interdimensional travel”, and any other outrageously incredible stories, concocted by government spooks, national security personnel, and secret agents in the “UFOlogy” and “pseudodebunker” communities (“pseudo-debunkers” in my vernacular, are official government spokesmen or scientific know-it-alls whose job it is to completely deny the existence of flying saucers, or to ridicule their other covert government counterparts, the UFOlogists, new-agers, or paranormalists).
Before you decide there is no ether, or no flying saucers, or before you believe the often-told “prime-time” lies that aliens are “here”, or that time-travel is possible, you should ask yourself whether or not your thinking on these subjects has been conditioned by Big Brother’s Biggest Lies. If you believe in relativism, I should point out that “time- travel” is an integral part of that, which is a very incredible impossibility which makes the so-called “science” you rely on a worthless piece of pseudointellectual crap concocted by someone who wanted to sabotage your mind on behalf of the self-appointed high priests of “Occult Ether Physics”.
The dimension of time seems to be attracting great notice, to judge from the number of recent movies that focus on it, such as Back to the Future, Terminator, Peggy Sue Got Married, etc. Stephen Hawking’s A Brief History of Time (1989) was a best-seller and became, even more surprisingly, a popular film. Remarkable, in addition to the number of books that deal with time, are the larger number which don’t, really, but which feature the word in their titles nonetheless, such as Virginia Spate’s The Color of Time: Claude Monet (1992). Such references have to do, albeit indirectly, with the sudden, panicky awareness of time, the frightening sense of our being tied to it. Time is increasingly a key manifestation of the estrangement and humiliation that characterize modern existence. It illuminates the entire, deformed landscape and will do so ever more harshly until this landscape and all the forces that shape it are changed beyond recognizing.
This contribution to the subject has little to do with time’s fascination for film-makers or TV producers, or with the current academic interest in geologic conceptions of time, the history of clock technology and the sociology of time, or with personal observations and counsels on its use. Neither aspects nor excesses of time deserve as much attention as time’s inner meaning and logic. For despite the fact that time’s perplexing character has become, in John Michon’s estimation, “almost an intellectual obsession” (1988), society is plainly incapable of dealing with it.
With time we confront a philosophical enigma, a psychological mystery, and a puzzle of logic. Not surprisingly, considering the massive reification involved, some have doubted its existence since humanity began distinguishing “time itself” from visible and tangible changes in the world. As Michael Ende (1984) put it: “There is in the world a great and yet ordinary secret. All of us are part of it, everyone is aware of it, but very few ever think of it. Most of us just accept it and never wonder over it. This secret is time.”
Just what is “time”? Spengler declared that no one should be allowed to ask. The physicist Richard Feynman (1988) answered, “Don’t even ask me. It’s just too hard to think about.” Empirically as much as in theory, the laboratory is powerless to reveal the flow of time, since no instrument exists that can register its passage. But why do we have such a strong sense that time does pass, ineluctably and in one particular direction, if it really doesn’t? Why does this “illusion” have such a hold over us? We might just as well ask why alienation has such a hold over us. The passage of time is intimately familiar, the concept of time mockingly elusive; why should this appear bizarre, in a world whose survival depends on the mystification of its most basic categories?
We have gone along with the substantiation of time so that it seems a fact of nature, a power existing in its own right. The growth of a sense of time—the acceptance of time—is a process of adaptation to an ever more reified world. It is a constructed dimension, the most elemental aspect of culture. Time’s inexorable nature provides the ultimate model of domination.
Preface to The Supernatural World by Danish author and philosopher Erwin Neutzsky-Wulff:
Are you fascinated by the supernatural? By the idea, that there may be a deeper meaning to existence?
That demons – or just beings from other worlds or dimensions – actually exist? Or do you simply wonder why some people seem to believe in, or even in some form experience, the supernatural?
If not, then you probably belong to a very small minority. In all likelihood it will not have escaped your attention, that there are entire retail chains, that exist to provide you with anything from gemstones with healing properties to inverted crosses – anything according to taste.
What is it all about? And what has auras and reincarnation got to do with the religion we were taught at Sunday school?
Are people who communicate with spirits insane, do they have real contact, or maybe both? And is the fascinating “forgotten wisdom” in any way compatible with modern science?
In this little book you will meet supernatural beings, and even follow them into their own world. You will learn about how they think, and what they are doing here. You will discover that they are neither angels nor demons, men from Mars or hallucinations, but that they nevertheless visit us for a very specific reason.
And what is even more: That they and their world are only separated from ours with a thin veil. That it does not require a mystical spell to get to see them, but on the contrary that we every day more or less unconsciously perform a “ritual of deflection” to keep them away from us.
Have you ever had the feeling that you were not alone, even though you ‘knew’ that you were? Or thought about how goldfish in a bowl might feel the same way?
Maybe this book will answer questions, which you have asked yourself a thousand times. Or maybe it will start you on a journey of discovery, more exciting that you would ever have dreamt possible.
Trees have been considered to be magickal for many centuries. They have been the homes of wood spirits and the keepers of sacred circles. Many tales of the part trees have played in witchcraft and the occult were told to young children, such as the admonition to avoid old oak trees or groves of oaks. These were places witches met and were filled with much power. Even today some of the old tales live on in superstitions such as ‘knock on wood’. So you may ask if there is any truth to these tales, for all legends have some basis in truth. Well for the Wiccan or Neo-Pagan trees are a source of power because they are rooted in the Mother Earth and they reach to the heavens. This is the essential posture we humans seek in trying to reach a state of balance during meditation. We visualize a stream of energy from the Earth flowing up into us, as a stream of energy flows into us from above. Trees are in this state all the time and are therefore a very natural source of power for magick. Most any tree can be used for magickal purposes, though certain trees seem better suited to certain forms of Magick.
There are lists called tables of correspondences, which contain specific colors, smells, tastes, plants, and sounds associated with certain emotions and concepts. There are also trees listed in some of these. Examples of trees used in certain situations include the following:
As you can see, for those of us who live on the Eastern Shore of Maryland, there are many trees which we can use in magickal work. So how does one tap into this wealth of power. One way is to let the tree help in ‘recharging’ you after a long day or after an extremely emotional event. A simple procedure for doing this follows. Pick a tall, straight tree such as a pine. Generally you should try to feel the tree’s spirit to see if it seems welcoming to you. Once you’ve found a tree you feel comfortable with, walk once around it clockwise saying ‘Great tree, Ancient of the Earth, Will you grant and give my strength rebirth?’ Now sit on the ground with your back straight and pressed against the tree. As you sit, feel the power running between the Earth and sky through the tree. See your body surrounded by the aura of the tree and feel this power filling you with renewed strength. You may at this point even begin to actually ‘hear’ the tree speaking to you. A wise person will listen to it’s wisdom. Once you feel rested and renewed, rise slowly and thank the tree for helping you regain your balance and strength. A gift to the tree is not inappropriate. One way of doing this would be to bury a coin or something of value at the base of the tree. Care should be taken not to injure the tree in the process of burying the item. This is but one way of having trees aid you in your daily life. There are many others to be found in various books on Earth/Nature magick. I hope you will explore the many possibilities further. The only advice I can offer is to remember you are dealing with a living spirit and that you should avoid harming the tree. Have fun with your experiments and enjoy the new friendships to be found in trees.
